new hope: uganda

Well, I’m going to Africa next summer.

Call it an “extended short term mission trip,” or something like that. Although the dates aren’t nailed down yet, my hope is to spend the majority of the summer there–at least two months, maybe up to three. And I’ve been dying to tell you all about it every since the thought first came into my mind.

…wait, what? Where exactly are you going?

Destination: Uganda. Specifically, I’ve applied and been accepted to work under an organization called New Hope Uganda. I’ll be living and working at the Kasana Children’s Home.

Why Africa?

I’ve spent quite a bit of time over the past year or so looking into various missions opportunities. I wanted something that was more than just a week-long experience; I wanted to immerse myself in something big. And in the middle of beginning an application for a different opportunity, this one landed in my lap. The ministry at Kasana is a place where I can use my God-given hobbies and talents to enable and advance New Hope’s mission to serve the orphans of Uganda. A better question is…why not Africa?

What will you be doing?

In the meantime, I can always use prayer. Pray that all the necessary details would fall into place, especially in the chaos of this semester at school. Pray for New Hope Uganda. Pray that the funds I need for the trip will be readily available.

Speaking of funds, you can expect some visual changes around here to coincide with the African focus of my next several months. Fundraising is a must, so please bear with me while I pull everything together.

I can think of many other places that are way more enchanting than New Mexico. But it does have one thing in its favor: a pretty epic tournament.

Unfortunately, the actual tournament wasn’t very well documented…I guess I just found too many other things to do aside from take pictures. But I put together a slideshow of our adventures on the trip there and back, so for all you interested people, here you go:

Wow! Blog stats around here are pretty minimal of late, but I can’t say I blame y’all. In the rush and excitement of Nationals and a trip halfway across the country, blogging took a backseat to other activities.

The tournament itself was fabulous in every respect (check out results and more here). As can probably be expected by now, I put together a video blog of the event—only this time, it grew to massive proportions. It’s hardly possible to cover Nationals in the space of ten minutes, but I gave it a shot:

Sunday evening was our spring orchestra concert, and an amazingly fun event. We performed pieces from Pirates of the Caribbean, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Patriot—I love movie soundtracks. And, for our community orchestra, we did pretty well.

My dad taped most of the songs, but due to technical difficulties (okay, due to my impatience to deal with the technical difficulties) I’ve only uploaded the Irish medley Toni, Katy and I performed at the end. Musicians, please ignore the fact that my violin is woefully out of tune. You may now proceed:

Some April Fool’s Day jokes are too good to pass up—especially when they’re perpetrated by the world’s largest broadcaster, BBC. Take a step back in time, to April 1st, 1957…

Or, in plain English, “Ireland forever!” Two of our friends, Josh and Abby, are over for a couple nights, and with so many musicians in one place it was simply impossible to let an occasion like St. Patrick’s Day pass without a musical tribute. So I present our very own Irish session music—probably “traditional” only in the fact that we had no idea where we’d end up when we started.
