Very nice. This should be required reading for politicians. Unfortunately I dont think they would care. Just like the homeless man in Stickboys post... they just keep trying to convince us that the brown table us blue.

How 'bout this def form an really old version of Webster's. Quoted by Josh McDowell:

"Truth is fidelity to the original."

Just think about that for a while. I think it's probably the most profound definition I have ever found.

Thank You Beth,
Unfortunately your definition is not shared among our culture as much as it should be.

In a study done by Focus on the Family they interviewed a number of people in a number of places. At the end of the study the general just of the people they interviewed said that Truth is basically what ever you think it is. I'm sorry it has come to this.

To put it in the words of a homeless person they interviewed: "If you think this table is blue" (Pointing at a brown pick nick table) "Then it's blue"

She says this in spite of the fact that truth in and of itself is essentially reality.

You might not like me for saying this, but you sound like an LDer. And in my eyes, that's a huge compliment! One of my LD values is Truth so I argue for it all the time, but you did a better job than I ever have on expounding it. Truth is completely foundational to who we are so it makes for a great value because it subsumes all others.

Wait. Truth isn't so clear cut as you think. Take this example:

The statement below is false.
The statement above is true.

Ok, so which is true? Are they both true? Are they both false? Is the truth relative? *gasps*

*grins cheekily*

I think that is magnificent that such powerful words can be put so simply. I wish that was how it is more often. I've seen times in which the Bible has been put into such a complicated way, that the whole meaning, and power, and glory of the Word is lost.
Thanks for sharing. I really needed this.
God bless your spreading of his Word.

Oh Beth, what a wonderful, reflective post! It is so important to be reminded of the truth of Truth, isn't it? I keep thinking that the reality of truth is a theme I want to portray in a future novel, because it is so important, and our culture is quickly losing the understanding of it. We need more people like you!

Firstly I want to know how the debating went. Details, I want details! *bounces*

And secondly, I want to know if you got my email. It's big, and the attachments are weird from Mac to Windows.

That's about all. Oh, and I just needed to remind you that this is the fifth comment you have not returned.

I fear all my dire prophesies of you shunning HSB and all are coming true...

*sighs*
