Houston Warm-up

This past weekend found us out-of-town yet again for the first NCFCA tournament of the year. For me, it was a good four days spent with friends and family–even in spite of my personal failures throughout.

We stopped on the drive up to swing by Bluebell Creameries. It’s fast becoming a tradition–who can resist Bluebell ice cream? Certainly not a bunch of homeschoolers who practically fill the whole store.

Our club banner. ARC is a pretty cool group of people.

Josh gets ready to compete in apologetics, a speech event in which students explain their personal faith through a number of pre-written questions.

Grace and Christina, two of the wonderful people I got to spend time with.

This, my friends, is a wonderful flow of one of my debate rounds. Please understand that it isn’t supposed to look this way. There ought to be four, neat columns of notes, succintly summarizing the arguments in the round. Instead…well, you see what I ended up with.

Brian and Toni, debating in outrounds.

The Pig. As the unofficial ARC mascot, he bears a very important message: Don’t take yourself too seriously.

I love these people.

…and these people…

…and yes, even this person!

Excitement and congratulations for those breaking to the next round.

Saturday night, after the awards ceremony, a group of us gathered at IHOP to have fun and look over ballots from the tournament. Festivities continued until nearly 2:00 AM, after which we straggled back to our respective places of rest in order to grab a few hours of sleep before heading home the next day.

“…in spite of my personal failings…” Yes, ladies and gentlemen, failings. Including competing in apologetics, breaking and winning 27th place in debate (out of about 80 teams), and qualifying to the Regional Invitational. That sums up “failings” perfectly, don’t you think?
I love you Bethy

Failure isn’t determined by awards or the lack thereof. (Did that sound poetic or what?)
I love you too.

I have to agree. That sounded poetic.

Oh yeah, the tournament, I forgot about that. Congrats not only for your “success and accomplishments”, but also for your… soul-searching(?), character improvement(?), conquering the unknown(?)… I don’t know what else to call it, but you know what I mean.
Toni’s thought bubble… too funny (and accurate?).

EEEEK! Beth! I came over here and I had to double check that to see if it was really your page! *shakes head in dismay* NOW will you stop changing templates??
Beth on 07 Feb 2009 at 11:41 pm #
Aw, Amy–you don’t like it? But yes, I think the template-changing spree will end here for awhile.
Strange how every comment so far has ended in a smiley…I think I’ll break the trend.

Hi Beth! I’m Narniagirl from HSB. I’m still subscribed to your blog on my feed, so when I saw you had gotten a new site I just had to come over and compliment it! It is absolutely lovely… I *love* WP!

Can you believe that after all of the times I’ve been in the same building for every Houston tournament, this was the first time I had ever seen the sanctuary. When I saw it, my jaw dropped. It evokes a kind of awe and holiness. And all those years, I had been walking just 50 feet away from it. I wonder how many other beautiful treasures I miss in life…
